Buford Pope ”My musical journey started in a record store when I was 15 years old”

Can you share your musical journey with us, from when you first discovered your passion for music to where you are today as an independent musician?

My musical journey started in a record store when I was 15 years old. A friend of mine introduced me to Bob Dylan, and when I heard him sing, I was completely blown away. I had never heard anything like it. I continued to listen to his music and discovered other artists in his genre. However, it took me another 15 years before I had the confidence to start composing my own music. Up until today, I have released nine albums, and I’m currently in the final stages of completing my tenth.

What motivates you to create music, and how do you stay inspired to continue making new and unique music?

Almost everything inspires me to write music, but most of all, being on tour or performing live. If I experience writer’s block, it’s often due to a lack of shows. And, of course, life itself is the biggest motivation.

As an independent musician, you wear many hats – from composing to marketing. How do you balance these different aspects of your career, and what challenges do you face in the process?

That’s a good question. This could be the hardest part. Focusing on composing your own songs and finding the best way to perform them, along with having the right gear, should be your primary concerns. I’ve reached points in my career where I’ve thought, ‘This is enough; I’ll continue doing what I love without the pressure to promote it…

Could you tell us about your creative process? How do you come up with new ideas for songs, and how do you go about turning those ideas into finished tracks?

Everyone goes through life with ups and downs, and many of us have the need to talk about it. Writing a song is another way to cope with life’s challenges. It doesn’t have to be complicated; songs become like family members. If you don’t want to share them, you can always find comfort in them on your own. Even though I know that a certain song won’t be released, I always finalize them; it’s a beautiful thing to have.

Independent musicians often face financial challenges. How do you manage your finances to sustain your music career while also covering your personal expenses?

When I embarked on my musical journey, I made sure to have a secondary source of income. I didn’t want to compromise, especially since I was in my thirties and understood that every action, whether good or bad, has consequences. On the other hand, you can hop on that horse and see where it will take you.

Can you share a particularly memorable or challenging experience from your journey as a musician that has had a significant impact on your career and personal growth?

As an independent artist, you are always striving to discover new marketing partners and opportunities. However, this also makes you susceptible to being misled. I’ve personally experienced a few years of teaming up with the wrong individuals. The key is to trust your instincts. If your heart doesn’t provide guidance, listen to your gut. And if both of those sources leave you uncertain, it might be wise to heed both.

With the rise of digital platforms, the music industry has changed significantly. How do you navigate the digital landscape, including streaming services and social media, to promote your music and connect with your audience?

When it comes to this, I’m not very good, because it interferes with my creativity. It’s like a chef taking orders and then going out into the kitchen to prepare the dishes. Of course, I do my best to promote my live performances and new releases, but promoting myself with my own words feels awkward. I try for a while, but then my mind gets occupied by writing new music or something else.

Collaboration is a key part of the music industry. Have you worked with other musicians or producers, and how have these collaborations influenced your sound and career?

I’ve worked with quite a few producers, and even though they mostly use the same tools, the outcomes differ significantly, which is wonderful. I’ve also co-written a few songs with other artists, and that really adds a new dimension to your own ideas. It also gives you a glimpse into that person’s self.

Your music likely reflects your unique style and perspective. Could you describe your musical identity and what makes your sound stand out in a crowded industry?

It’s hard for me to answer this because people always have their own idea of what you sound like and what they refer to. Trying to sound like someone else can be futile. You can only be yourself and have faith in that. Changing something in my composition would mean altering my true self, and it might come across as seeking attention in the wrong way.

What role does live performance play in your music career, and how do you approach planning and executing your live shows, especially in light of recent challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic?

Just before the pandemic, I did a three-week tour in the US. I was invited to play live radio spots, and in addition to that, I performed in nearby venues. I traveled from Ohio to Tennessee, then to Pennsylvania, and back down to Mississippi. I built a little fan base and had plans to return, but due to Covid-19, everything came to a halt. Live performances are the cornerstone of it all!

Many fans are interested in the stories behind the songs. Could you share the backstory or inspiration behind one of your recent tracks that holds special meaning to you?

Once I started composing my own music, songs just burst out of me. I remember when we had our first child, and how everything changed in the blink of an eye. The overwhelming love I felt for my son led me to call my mother and ask her if she had felt the same for me. This moment inspired me to write a song about her, titled “Heavenly Mama,” which can be found on the album “Too Young to Be Old.” While this is not a new track, it holds a very special meaning to me.

Looking ahead, what are your future goals and aspirations as an independent musician? Are there any upcoming projects or exciting developments in your career that you’d like to share with your fans and the audience?

But, of course! I’ve been touring and performing as a solo artist for the past few years because it was impossible to travel with a full band. However, now I’ve teamed up with some guys, and we’re about to hit the road. There will also be a new album coming out soon, so keep your ears and eyes open. I’m really looking forward to seeing all of you soon, and thank you for the support. You all make it worthwhile!
